About Constrictor Snakes Perhaps there is nothing more terrifying than the thought of being eaten, and the idea of being swallowed whole evokes the most primal of fears. Although there are little on record of large snakes actually eating humans, there are four types of constricting snakes capable of growing large enough to eat an adult human: the reticulated python (Python reticulatus), the Burmese python (Python bivittatus), the African rock python (Python sebae) and the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus), which is a member of the boa (Boidae) family. Constricting snakes are generally nonvenomous and use their powerful bodies to slowly kill their meals. While it was once believed that prey was suffocated or crushed to death, it is now thought that the coiling, constricting action causes a rise in pressure inside the prey's body which causes the heart to fail.
