Our Plastic Coelacanth Toy This strange prehistoric fish, originally from the Devonian Period (419-312 mya), the coelacanth, is still here today and belongs to the most endangered order of the world. Our figurine is 3 1/4 inches long, but the real fish can grow up to 6 feet long. Our replica is painted bright blue, but this is an artistic rendition. The few coelacanths, that have been found in the Indian Ocean, are usually dark gray and are speckled white on a gray, brown or red brown on its armour-like scaled body. This primitive fish resembles a lungfish. Our figurine represents the proper shape of the animal with its distinctive eight lobed fins, which are used much more for stability than for swimming as they drift around at night in the ocean current, even sometimes upside-down, looking for prey. This coelacanth model makes for an inexpensive display item, works well in a diorama or science report about rare species or "living fossils." If you care enough about accuracy, it might be fun to take out a paint brush and decorate him with lifelike colors. Compare him with our other museum-quality coelacanth replica, place him together with our Devonian Period animals, or our add some friends from our deepwater fish section. The coelacanths constitute a now rare order of fish that includes two extant species in the genus Latimeria: the West Indian Ocean coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) primarily found near the Comoro Islands off the east coast of Africa and the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis). They follow the oldest-known living lineage of Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fish and tetrapods), which means they are more closely related to lungfish, reptiles, and mammals than to the common ray-finned fishes. They are found along the coastlines of the Indian Ocean and Indonesia. Since there are only two species of coelacanth and both are threatened, it is the most endangered order of animals in the world. The West Indian Ocean coelacanth is a critically endangered species.
