They are individually wrapped which helps guarantee quality and protection, if the film is damaged/has a hole in it then your eyes get damaged as well. Induvial wrapping allows for extra protection until they are ready to be opened and used on eclipse day. You need these to view the eclipse regardless if you are in the path of totality or not, (during totality they are not needed) leading up to totality and after totality they are needed regardless of your location.
